Fiber optics and safety: characteristics, measures and troubleshooting

Description:

The use of optical networks are becoming more prevalent in the transportation of our data and everyday applications. Fiber optics is a very powerful medium, but which is also very dangerous if misused. It is required to know and understand the security measures surrounding the installation, handling and use of fiber optics.

This training is meant to be informative on good practices and security related to optical fiber networks.

Target audience:

Network administrators, technical maintenance staff, beginners who want to learn the fiber optics communication cabling and workers with experience in copper networks who want to upgrade their knowledge to fiber optics.

Learning objective:

1. Measure and evaluate fiber optics characteristics.
2. Describe the phenomena of propagation of optical signals.
3. Defining the parameters of a link.
4. Identify the problems of optical transmission system.
5. The principles of installing fiber optics.
6. Use of troubleshooting methods.

Course duration: 1 Day (with practice / simulation / analysis)

Course content:

1.0 Basic Features
The physical characteristics, types of fibers will be reviewed. (construction, diameter, methods, index)
2.0 Fiber transmission
The different types carry signals in different ways.
The attenuation of signals traveling through the fiber is subject to different issues (dispersion, nonlinear effects, reflection).
The link loss calculation "Link Budget" will also be explained.
3.0 Health and Safety
The concepts of health and safety related to handling of the fiber will be laid at appropriate places during training.
4.0 Test and Measurement
Tests and measures used to validate link performance.
OTDR allows to visualize the links quality aswell as losses caused by handling, installation and junctions in the optical link.
Measurement techniques, including reflectometry, which allows detection problems that prevent them from getting the target performance will be demonstrated.

Methodology:

This course differs from conventional learning, it is based on competency-based approach. The course covers the theoretical, simulation, practice and analysis.
